Swedish soul singer Laila Adèle is set to make a highly anticipated return to Melodifestivalen in 2026, exactly twenty years after her first appearance in the competition. The acclaimed artist will compete with the song 'Oxygen', a powerful ballad that she co-wrote herself and describes as deeply rooted in her personal journey and lifelong connection to music
Born in Morocco and adopted to Sweden at just two weeks old, Laila grew up in Stockholm surrounded by music and dance. She credits soul, Motown and legendary vocalists such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight as her biggest influences. Her passion for performance began early, after watching Diana Ross on television as a child — a moment she describes as life-changing
She was signed to a major record label at the age of 19 and released her debut album in 2001, marking the start of a career that now spans nearly 25 years. Alongside her work as a recording artist, she has built an impressive career in musical theatre, starring in productions such as Little Shop of Horrors and Dreamgirls, where her portrayal of Effie became one of her most defining roles
Often referred to as “Sweden’s soul queen,” Laila Adèle says authenticity has always guided her artistic choices.
“If I believe in what I do on stage, the audience will feel it,”
Her Melodifestivalen 2026 entry 'Oxygen' was written during a first-time studio session with producer Jonas Thander and songwriter Marcus Winter-john. The song’s title emerged naturally as Laila described music as being “like oxygen” — something she cannot live without. Musically, the track is described as a modern power ballad inspired by classic Whitney Houston songs, building from a gentle opening into a full vocal climax
Laila Adèle will compete in the second heat on February 7 in Gothenburg, and promises a performance centered on warmth, powerful vocals and elegant lighting. While keeping most staging details secret, she hints at an emotional and visually beautiful presentation designed to connect deeply with the audience
Reflecting on her return, Adèle says simply qualifying among nearly 4,000 submitted songs already feels like a victory. Still, she does not hide her ambition:
“Of course I would love to win”
As she prepares to step back onto one of Sweden’s biggest stages, Laila Adèle describes performing as “coming home” — a feeling she hopes to share with viewers when Melodifestivalen 2026 begins.
