Ireland: RTÉ ready to quit Eurovision 2026 if Israel competes

Ireland's broadcaster RTÉ has spoken out regarding the country’s participation in next year’s Eurovision. In a statement released Thursday, September 11, RTÉ confirmed that Ireland will not take part in the upcoming edition in Vienna, if Israel is allowed to compete.

RTÉ clarified that its final decision will depend on the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which has given member broadcasters the option to withdraw without penalties until December.

The broadcaster elaborated on its decision, citing the facts:

"RTÉ feels that Ireland’s participation would be unconscionable given the ongoing and appalling loss of lives in Gaza. RTÉ is also deeply concerned by the targeted killing of journalists in Gaza, and the denial of access to international journalists to the territory, and the plight of the remaining hostages.”

Israel’s participation has already drawn public reactions from several other broadcasters and government officials. RÚV (Iceland), while confirming plans to compete in Eurovision 2026 and remaining commited to the scheduling of Söngvakeppnin 2026, left the door open for a potential withdrawal should Israel be allowed to compete. RTVSLO (Slovenia) has gone a step further, formally requesting Israel’s exclusion and threatening a boycott if ignored. Meanwhile, Spain’s Minister of Culture has said that Israel’s presence in international events should not be normalized, keeping withdrawal as an option. RTVE has confirmed that Benidorm Fest 2026, Spain's national final,  will proceed regardless of whether Spain ultimately competes in Eurovision next year.

As the debate over Israel’s participation continues, it remains to be seen how many countries will ultimately make it to the stage in Vienna.
