Portugal: Festival da Canção 2027 drops semi-finals

Portuguese broadcaster RTP has revealed that Festival da Canção 2027 will take place on 6 March, with a total of 16 songs set to compete in a single televised show.

The preparations will officially begin on 1 November 2026, with the submission period remaining open throughout the month. As a result, all entries will be selected from voluntarily submitted songs, with RTP once again no longer inviting songwriters and composers to take part.

A five-member jury will be responsible for selecting the competing songs.

Another change from recent editions is the return to a single televised show, to be held on “national territory”, as stated in the festival's regulations. The usual format of two semi-finals followed by a final will therefore be dropped.

As in recent years, the winning song will be determined by a 50/50 split between the public vote and a regional jury representing Portugal's seven territorial regions.

As in the 2026 edition, the regulations state that the winning song is only “eligible to represent RTP at the Eurovision Song Contest”. The wording no longer explicitly guarantees that the winner will represent Portugal at Eurovision. In previous years, the regulations also outlined the winning artist's obligations, including rehearsals, promotional activities and a two-week stay in the host city.

Nevertheless, the European Broadcasting Union has confirmed that RTP will participate in Eurovision 2027.
