Trullu, who was born in Cagliari and comes from Decimomannu, Sardinia, is no stranger to the spotlight. In February, he won the fourth season of The Voice Kids Italia, competing as part of Nek’s team. During the final, he performed Michael Sembello’s Maniac while playing electric guitar, securing the title in front of the studio audience and jury.
His musical journey began at a very young age. According to the Junior Eurovision website, Matteo was selected as a finalist in the regional auditions for Zecchino d’Oro when he was just four years old and later sang with the Piccolo Coro di San Sperate. Rock soon became his main passion, with bands such as Europe and Twisted Sister among his influences. He asked for his first electric guitar at the age of six and later expanded his skills to piano and drums.
His success has extended beyond The Voice Kids. Before his television breakthrough, Matteo won several local and national music competitions, including the Galtellì Song Festival and the Stintino Guitar Contest, and reached the final of Sanremo Junior in 2024. In 2025, he also won the Fuoriclasse Talent competition, which reportedly attracted more than 5,000 entries.
'Che cos’è l’amore?' will represent Italy
While the Junior Eurovision platform initially announced that Matteo’s song would be revealed at a later date, RAI has already confirmed the title of the Italian entry: 'Che cos’è l’amore?' ('What Is Love?'). The song is produced by Universal Music Italia.
The official Junior Eurovision website has yet to publish the song itself, meaning further details about its release and presentation are still expected in the coming weeks.
Beyond music, RAI describes Matteo as a keen drone enthusiast and a supporter of his hometown football club, Cagliari. He is also continuing his musical studies, including pop-rock guitar at the Cagliari Conservatory.
Italy returns to Malta
Junior Eurovision 2026 will take place on Saturday, 24 October, at the Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre in Ta’ Qali. Malta will host the competition for the third time, following the 2014 and 2016 editions. A total of 16 countries are confirmed to participate this year.
Italy has a particularly notable history at the contest. The country made its Junior Eurovision debut in 2014 — also in Malta — and won on its first attempt, with Vincenzo Cantiello and 'Tu primo grande amore' collecting 159 points. Italy's best result since that victory came in 2016, when Fiamma Boccia finished third.
Matteo’s participation will mark Italy’s 12th appearance at Junior Eurovision. The country was represented last year by Leonardo Giovannangeli, who finished 12th with 'Rockstar'.
The Italian delegation will now prepare for its return to the Maltese stage, with Matteo set to follow in the footsteps of the country’s previous Junior Eurovision representatives when he performs 'Che cos’è l’amore?' in October.
