Minimal Wind are back in Eesti Laul, ready for another round of musical storytelling. In this exclusive interview with Hashtag Eurovision, Taavi-Hans Kõlar talks about their growth from a duo to a full band, their evolution since participating in the estonian national final in 2022, the inspiration behind their sound, and their latest song, 'Armageddon', competing in 'Eesti Laul' 2025.
Márcia Santana: Hello guys. Welcome to Hashtag Eurovision, we’re really happy you accepted our invitation and that we have the opportunity to get to know you a little better. How are you feeling about returning to Eesti Laul?
Taavi-Hans Kõlar: Hi! It feels great to be back. Three years have gone so fast and the time is ripe for round two, or as they say in the theatre world, the second act.
How did the idea of turning the duo 'Taavi & Paula' into a full band come about?
We (Taavi and Paula) have been playing and writing music together for 8 years now. I think it's natural growth - we started off as an acoustic guitar duo, then started noticing that we have a lot of music within us and wondering whether it would be possible to do something like the songs that we've listened to all our lives.
At first we thought that we were going to become a music production duo and work with different singers, but the first thing we did with Elisabeth Tiffany turned out great (Eesti Laul 2022 second place) and we decided to continue together. All of us lived in a small beautiful town called Viljandi, which was a great environment for writing our debut album "hi.", since there are not a lot of distractions in small towns and it's easy to focus.
What inspired the choice of the name Minimal Wind?
It came from one of the greatest fantasy books of all time, 'The Name Of The Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss. It beautifully describes the experience of playing music and music meaning everything to you in hard times, formative years. Also back then we were influenced by the minimalist movement, so it was two birds with one stone.
Your music has been described as 'Ariana Grande meets Coldplay with a retro touch'. How did you arrive at this mix of styles?
Elisabeth Tiffany used to learn to sing like Ariana when she was a teenager and Ariana is part of her DNA as a singer. Probably also as a person. Me and Paula grew up listening to Coldplay and our music has quite a stadium rock sound, it's like a mixture of a band and a solo artist. I must say though, that in 2025 I would describe our sound differently. Sonically The Neighbourhood with its dark vibe and deliberately detuned sounds has had a huge influence on all of us. Taavi and Paula have become fans of the metal band, Bring Me The Horizon and there are a bit sharper teeth in our music than Neighbourhood.
Personally I know that it would make more sense to write "track" type songs, without a lot of dynamics and the same vibe all the way through, so that it's more radio and playlist friendly, but it's very hard for me to get excited about writing "tracks". I want there to be composition, I want the tension to grow, I want surprises in music, I want the lyrics to mean something, I want hidden meanings and easter eggs, I want concept albums and I want all the albums to form a cohesive whole, so there would be a grand arc to everything we do.
I believe we have the skillset for writing radio friendly pop songs and there's nothing wrong with that, but existentially, as my life's work, I would like to do something more interesting and novel and do something that hasn't been done yet.
Your debut album 'hi.' received an important nomination. How did that make you feel and what was the creative process behind that album?
After Eesti Laul, many doors opened for us and we booked gigs, where we had to play up to 75 minute shows. The only problem was that we had one song as a band. So we went "all in" and started writing a lot of music - luckily me and Paula had written for many years together, so we could come up with songs quite fast. Also Elisabeth is a great writer and producer and Velle is probably the most advanced producer of all of us, so our talents mixed well and we could write with 4x speed.
I like to think of our albums as the development of a human - 'hi' is our first album, our "hello, world" moment. We wrote it bottom up, in the sense that we didn't decide to make an RnB rock album, rather we discovered that's the kind of music that happens when we write together. With this album we can use the metaphor of childhood - it's experimental, it has fairy tail characters, (revangel, sirens etc), it's us experimenting what works live and what we write. The album was definitely authentic, we were not trying to write hits, rather our goal was to say what we have to say musically and be authentic.
What impact did Eesti Laul 2022 have on your career and artistic life? Since 'What to Make of This' had great success on the estonian charts, being the second most-played song on Spotify in the country.
It was a dream come true - we got to play together with artists we grew up listening to (Passenger, Hurts, Ewert and the Two Dragons, Trad.Attack! and many more) and we got a taste of life we always desired. It was also very hard, in the sense that we were just college students and then suddenly we had to make a lot of critical decisions, choose who to work with, fire people, get to know each other in addition to all the things we were already doing in life. Every moment felt like a potentially wasted opportunity, since we knew that public interest in our work cannot last.
This time around I will not try to control everything, enjoy the journey and focus on the core of what we do - writing great music and doing live shows.
You’re back with 'Armaggedon'. What is the main message of this song? And what are the main differences compared to 'What to Make of This'?
It's about addiction, since we all got addicted to heroin.. I'm joking (only fentanyl is available in Estonia)..
Here's the real answer from Paula's secret diary:
one last moment of calm before the storm
before basically going to war - with your demons, your addictions
kind of wishing to go back to when you had a clean sheet in front of you, but knowing it is not possible — and that is ultimately what makes life exciting and painful at the same time
you know there’s no point in could-have-been’s, but you still let yourself sink into that feeling for a while
in the end moving on, but taking one last stop to look back at your life, reflecting, wondering what has become of dreams you had
yearning just for someone to witness you taking that leap — to know that you’re not alone
it’s the end of one world, but a beginning of another — that’s why the title “armageddon”
Regarding your performance, what can we expect to be different this time?
Let's just say that in our music video, 'Armageddon' was the internal battle, but in our live show, it will be external. We are really excited about our performance. This time around we have a lot more experience and can't wait to show it to you.
If you win Eesti Laul, what would it mean for you to represent Estonia at Eurovision?
We'd be really proud. We'd like to draw attention to Estonia's music scene - we have a lot of amazing, undiscovered artists and the level of musicianship is really high.
What can we expect from Minimal Wind after Eesti Laul? Any projects on the horizon? What’s the next step?
We'll be playing an 'Armageddon' EP release concert on 3rd of May in Fotografiska, Tallinn. We'll also participate in Tallinn Music Week this year and our goal is to find a label.
We have already started working on our next LP. Most likely the LP-s will form a trilogy and the second one will be called Second Act. "hi." was about the childhood - it was dreamlike, experimental, innocent. Second Act will be about the next phase - moving out, starting an adventure, addiction, finding oneself etc. Hopefully the album will be ready by fall.
During the summer we are planning to play in festivals and write the album.
Sonically we're planning to do epic stuff, like add a string quartet and a choir to our album presentation concert.
Just to wrap up our interview, we really appreciate your time. Armageddon is definitely a musically rich song. I’m sure it will resonate with many people. What message would you like to leave for the Hashtag Eurovision followers and your fans?
Thanks for being with us, your support means so much to us! If you get a chance, come see us live, I think it's the most powerful way to experience our music.
